Native to Northern Europe, but
cultivated around the world. There are many different
varieties, but this is the most commonly used in
Aromatherapy. A variety used in Chinese medicine is
'Dong Kwai' used to treat imbalances brought on by
menopause.
For the scientists among you, the root
contains phelladrene, pinene, limonene, linalol and
borneol and coumarins which include osthol, angelicin,
bergapten and imperatorin. It also contains various
plant acids.
A great overall tonic for the immune
system, and is reputed to stimulate the appetite,
especially in cases of stress. It has been reputedly
beneficial to those suffering with Anorexia. It is also
a detoxifier and diuretic and improves lymph drainage,
and is valuable for rheumatism, arthritis, fluid
retention and cellulite. Angelica is also an excellent
treatment for bronchitis and coughs.
An easy oil to mix, due to its pleasant
smell. Goes well with most oils, but often used with
patchouli, clary sage, oakmoss, vetivert, lemon, orange,
grapefruit and bergamot.
